The long haired gene first showed up in 2002 in a pet store. Old Fellows Rattery adopted her and she produced a litter with standard coats. She was bred back to a son and the long haired coat showed up. Her name was Harley hence the name of the long haired coat. The harley coat is long and whispy compared to the thicker standard coat. Harley coated dwarf rats are becoming popular so care must be taken to breed ethically.
